About The Artwork

Acrylics on canvas panel Ringleb’s abstract figurative paintings live from introspection and the attempt to cast the subconscious into pictures. They do not want to please at first glance, but express and are thereby directly opposed to the ratio. Their message has its roots out-of-focus, below the surface of consciousness and the effect is targeted at the gut, not the brain. In this manner, pictures appear like in a Rorschach test – you recognize forms, patterns, figures, faces. The energetic and turbulent lines leave it up to the audience to think and feel the pictures to the end. For Ringleb, painting is at the same time meditation and fist fight. The meditative element, the complete melting with the creative process in the here and now is accompanied by a massive physical act of creation in which everything within reach can be a potential tool or medium. Color is layered thickly, removed, scratched, destroyed, re-layered and obliterated again. Figures and forms emerge and disappear until something lasting is established and allowed to stay. Often human traits appear, shapes, mostly faces as the strongest expression of liveliness and encounter. When the battle is over, the painting remains as a silent witness and trophy to be hung over a sofa like a pair of antlers.

Christian Ringleb, born 1971, lives and works in Munich-Germany as a visual artist with his own studio. The artistic spark in his life came from the emerging European hip-hop culture of the 80’s and the associated graffiti writing scene. The principles of that scene, which were isolated from the classic art establishment, as well as the foregoing of an intellectual classification of his own work, affected Ringleb’s attitude towards painting as a free form of expression. Liberated from many formalities, the pretense remains, that good art must burn and does not require explanation. Following a year of full-time training in figural and still life with a painter in Munich came the academic course of studies in communication design at the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg and instrumental experiences in free painting classes. The first working years thereafter were shaped by commissions in the area of applied art and illustration. The end of the 90’s marked the final return to free painting and a separation of the commercial work as a freelance designer from that as freelance artist.
