About The Artwork

Alcea #2 2017 The organic forms in my paintings evolve from representational drawings of medicinal plants. Then through repetition and kinetic memory the drawings are simplified and combined with open color. The language of the marks and colors parallel the subtler more invisible healing qualities of the plants. This unframed acrylic painting is on a canvas with a 1.5" finished profile. It is wired and ready for hanging.

During the last two decades, my work has centered on the myths and concepts that have defined our relationship to nature. While researching the widespread application of recombinant DNA technology to our food crops, I discovered my fascination and delight with the subject of botany. My work evolved out of my concern over the uncertain realities of genetic engineering, the accelerated speed of human dominion over nature, and my reverence for the miraculous design of plants. I decided to use watercolor and ink to make studies of California indigenous medicinal plants. I was deeply moved by the beauty and power of these plants, and I began studying how indigenous societies made these plants central to their cultures. In these cultures, it is essential for a shaman to achieve inner balance in order to journey into the other worlds and to be an effective healer. Central to my interest in medicinal plants and shamanic practices is this element of balance. For me, art with its capacity for promoting states of equilibrium in which competing influences achieve a dynamic balance, parallels my desire for a human future that is in harmony with the natural world.
