Sarah Muscalu's project Altered Visions is part of her artistic research that investigates the morphology and syntax of painting language, the identity of the medium and the ways of presenting painting as an object in a physical space. I could say that the artist's painting is theoretical and discursive. Even if it does not give up the representation of a subject, the artist's interest is oriented towards the representation itself, in a way that philosophy is applied on the study of artistic languages. Of course, we can ask ourselves: where did artistic knowledge end up today? The answer is difficult to give in a few lines. However, we can say that painting, or, in general, making art today, means not only representing something that you can perceive sensorially, but also questioning the language through which you communicate, artistic commitment and making bridges with other forms of knowledge in science, or philosophy. In general, Sarah Muscalu's painting exudes conceptual sophistication and erudition. In fact, it is not just about painting, the references to the materiality and expressiveness of the gesture being explicit, but about the image, in general. The pictorial environment has thus metamorphosed into a post-medium that includes in its linguistic space elements from photography. Using the technique of photomontage and collage, as it was used by some Soviet constructivist artists, the artist creates large partially painted surfaces in which coexist fragments of images representing the industrial infrastructure of communist Romania, currently destroyed or in an advanced stage of degradation. The support of the painting becomes flexible and folds on the topic of the exhibition space, thus creating an organic-immersive space.
