About The Artwork

An exercise in making a Self Portrait, No. 4., applies the same technique of drawing individual facial expressions. I begin to experiment with a different drawing technique , scale and medium for each facial feature. The same approach is used in the "An exercise in making a Self Portrait, No.1, 2, and 3". An exercise in making a Self Portrait, No.4, is a further development as it uses a slightly different approach to the previous works . The idea took shape from sorting through un-finished /un-resolved works. I wanted to make something of the marks on paper derived from ink splatters and random paintings so started drawing into and around existing works. I enjoyed tearing and cutting up my old paintings to create a back-drop for my new face. These works also became part of the face, (see black eye on right and nose). I feel this is the most "abstract" of the portraits but not intentionally so. Technique Each portrait is made by looking in the mirror to study facial characteristics and expressions. I try not to look at the drawing until it is finished so as not to influence my vanity. I select a particular piece of the face and make a drawing using a different media (pencil, ink, watercolour). I experiment with varying the scale to provide a fresh interest when drawing and to avoid repetition. I am introducing perspective to add another dimension when drawing a face. It is difficult not to revert back to what has gone before. My challenge here is to follow these techniques as each piece needs different treatment for this exercise. Composing these disparate styles and dimensions will determine the mood of the portrait and, hopefully, capture something of the person. I think Assemblage rather than collage is more appropriate to describe these works. I am pleased with how this face is framed with the semi-circular movement to the right and the fragmented outline framing the left side. Some things take on a life of their own and I feel this is so.

Please visit me on : www.mariannesturtridge.com I am an art teacher by profession and enjoy the constant challenges of "problem solving" and frustration that goes with art. Teaching art has encouraged me to experiment with new approaches and draw from a history of art knowledge. My paintings seek to convey a range of human feelings from community to alienation, sometimes with a religious, mythological or fantasy theme. While teaching children with physical disabilities I explored themes on attitudes towards disability, illness and censorship. The foundation of my work is drawing, often evolving into mixed media. My painting style ranges from traditional oil and watercolour painting to experimental work in a wide range of materials including computer-based art, bas-relief and ceramics. Alongside painting I have made clay sculptures including torsos and shoes. I use my life drawings as a starting point when making clay torsos and try to capture something of the person in this work.
