Argus, also Argos (other Greek Ἄργος, lat. Argus) - a character in ancient Greek mythology. A multi-eyed giant, in connection with which he received the epithets "All-Seeing" and "Many-eyed" or "Panopta." Many eyes, of which one part slept and the other was awake, made him an ideal guard. It was Hera who was given the task of guarding, turned into a cow, the lover of Zeus Io. Zeus instructed his son Hermes to free his mistress. Hermes managed with great difficulty to put Argus to sleep, after which he killed a multi-sided giant. After the death of Hera, she either turned Argus into a peacock, or placed his eyes on the peacock's tail.
