About The Artwork

My grandfather left college in the US to drive an ambulance on the front in WWI before the US joined the war effort. November 11, 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. Poppies have long been a symbol of remembrance (and protest on behalf of) all who died in that horrendous war. I wanted to paint poppies in a new way, especially in light of all the current events that suggest too many people, including those in power in the US and Europe, have forgotten the lessons and are forsaking their duty to the fallen soldiers. It struck me that borrowing from the concept in the Tarot of upright and reversed symbolic meanings could convey some of both the hope and the near desperate concern about the horrors of war, the failure of collective and individual memory and what is owed to the fallen soldiers. I like that the medium is watercolor on paper. Both are fragile and require care, much like a poppy, but also have an extraordinary beauty to them.

I work in wood, resin, pewter, watercolor, sumi ink and other materials to create art that tells stories based on the interplay of light and shadows on organic shapes and spaces as we move through time. I believe stories and narratives are a critical part of what defines humanity, and that throughout human history until the wide dissemination of electric light, stories (oral and visual) were told in the context of sunlight, firelight and candlelight, each of which creates an environment rich in shadows and movement for both the storyteller and the listener. I aim to capture elements of that narrative richness in my art.
