Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, fabrics, and archival pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. This artwork was created by harvesting images from printed matter, overpainting them, digitalizing them and loading them into Photoshop. Peter Vahlefeld then modifies his files endlessly, adding and subtracting colors, layers, and shapes on canvas until they reach their own decisive moment. Using digital paintbrushes to make his brushstrokes, as well as densely articulated brushwork with brooms and oil paint, combining these with the manipulated and appropriated images. The compositions venture into various configurations of spatial expression created by the superimposition of layers of paint and layers of prints. The result is a work that occupies a space between painting and its digital double, leaving a picture plane marked by an effortlessly elegant dance of smudges, puddles and saturated strokes.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Hong Kong and Hamburg (Germany). He studied fine arts at Parsons School of Design, NYC and currently lives between Berlin and Munich. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions and art fairs, including Art Fair Cologne, Art Karlsruhe (both Germany), Art Bodensee (Austria) and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Chloe Savigny (Paris), Fiona Alison (London), and 46 Parachute Purple (New York). Having a studio in Berlin, he was filmed there by the ZDF television channel for a Robert Mapplethorpe feature. His work can be found in corporate collections throughout Germany as well as in private collections worldwide.
