ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is inspired by a recent trip to India, specifically Varanasi, which I found particularly inspiring. I experienced the burning of bodies at the ghats by wandering into a ceremony, not quite realising where I was. I was nudged in the head by a stretcher carrying a corpse wrapped in gold cloth. I noticed two women sobbing in grief, and another woman next door shouting at them in Hindi to ‘stop crying - he’s gone now’. Then the body-cloths of the corpse were unwrapped leaving the under-layer of white cloth. The man’s head dropped out of the cloths and they covered it back up. Whilst the body burnt I started noticing I was breathing in ash, his ashes. The experience was so potent and inspired lots of the poems and paintings. The contrast between this side of India and the sunny, relaxed parts like Hampi or Kerala is what I found so divergent and it inspired the show’s title.

I was bought up in the countryside of Suffolk where most of my motivation to paint nature comes from. My mother was an artist and my father is a hobby sculptor so they taught me a lot when I was growing up. I had my first exhibition during university holidays (despite studying English Literature and History of Art) and afterwards I moved to London, where I now work from my studio in Hackney Wick. I paint land and seascapes from memories and sketches of places I've been, building texture with modrock, sand, mud & polyfilla and painting with my fingers, windscreen wipers, brushes & rags. My aim is not to create a perfect depiction of a specific scene but to arouse in viewers that feeling of being completely absorbed in the natural world. I work fast and spontaneously to translate that emotion onto the canvas. It's a very organic process through which I hope to convey the movement and, predominantly, the sheer force of nature in my paintings. My work is now shown in galleries and exhibitions across the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and sells to a number of patrons across both the art world and the wider world. This year I have had three solo shows, been the judge of Young Art East Anglia, had work shortlisted for the New English Art Club and am soon to begin a three-month residency at Oundle School in Peterborough.
