Titled "Fires 2019," this evocative piece explores the stark beauty that emerges in nature following a devastating event. The artwork is created with oil on oil-primed watercolour paper, delivering a tactile richness and depth that draws the viewer in. Inspired by the aftermath of 2019 bushfires in Australia, the piece thoughtfully depicts the transformation that occurs in affected forest areas. The Angophora and Gum trees, reduced to toothpick-like structures amidst a layer of white ash, evoke a sense of quiet resilience. The artwork tells a story of natural cycles, where destruction will soon be met with rebirth, as the surviving trunks begin to sprout new foliage, embodying the cycle of death and resurrection vital for the native fauna's survival. The creation process behind this artwork is noteworthy for its blend of abstraction and realism, capturing both the impressionistic qualities of the environment and the tangible details of nature's response to fire. This duality lends the piece a unique character, inviting a deeper reflection on the enduring strength and renewal found within the natural world.

My initial art training occurred in TAFE and Colleges of Advanced Education in Sydney, Australia the 1970s, where I was strongly influenced by Abstract Expressionism, sculptural formalism and performance-installation art. I practiced as a sculptor and performance artist until the late 80s. This was punctuated by two performances at the Cite Internationale Des Artes, Paris in 1984 courtesy of a AGNSW Moya Dyring Studio residency and an Australia Council travel grant. In the 1990s I began to paint and studied a Master of Arts at The University of Western Sydney from 99-2001.Over 20 years my studio research evolved to embrace the concept of "totalized time" and the stratification of memory in my work lends itself to the historical references I use in my paintings, creating a mixture of philosophical and ideological threads through time.
