Ashtray Painting

I did this painting of me and a friend. It's in reference to a photo she took of us one night while we were drinking wine and contemplating those things people tend to contemplate during transitionary periods in their lives. The cigarette reference is to one of the first times we hung out. We had scarred each other. Put out circles of cinder on our wrists to commemorate our first days of friendship. We were both lost. Sad and at the end of long term relationships with our significant others. Just going out to go out. To numb the pain and bewilderment of being abandoned. In a sense at least. It's also a nod to how we, humans, use each other. Not necessarily with bad connotations, but this notion of relationships being a crutch or even merely objects of comfort. Receptacles of thoughts and ideas. Passing thoughts. Passing breathes. Ends and deaths looming with Time advancing. I put into you memories of moments of repose. Breaks. Time to ourselves that we share. All in attempts to smother the flames of desires burning or haunting us like smoke in a room.
