ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Stokes art practice is informed by her familiar coastal environment and daily interaction within it through the ritual practice of walking. My work poses questions as to what defines landscape and one’s relationship with it. August is reflective of notations, residues, lived through my experience and purposefully wrestles with ambiguous ground; drawing from the Romantic lineage of landscape representation and late Modernist Abstraction, particularly lyrical Abstract Expressionism, where the act of making and mark hold a resonance. Landscape becomes about sensory experiences lived through the body rather than the singular framed view. “I prefer to consider painting as a site for notations of the layered experiences of place and self where the canvas becomes a filter through which light, space and mark, hover and suspend, reflecting nature’s intensity; pause and fractured moments. The work presents a physicality of making and the subtle variable white surface shifts between lightly and heavily painted areas, scraped markings with a palette knife, and heavier drawing using oil stick. The painting is stretched on canvas but shall be removed and included in the packing for shipping internationally

Stokes art practice is informed by her familiar coastal environment and daily interaction within it through the ritual practice of walking.Such an integral and sincere relationship to this landscape provides a platform for ideas to be explored through a blend of emotional and lived cartography. Avoiding a localized site, the artist pulls from a collective memory, targeting the felt vibrations of a journey. The works becomes a compilation of parallel landscapes crossing geographical boundaries both past and present; manipulating a register of experiences and histories of time spent, where memories, lost and reconfigured become fragments, glimpses fractured by time.
