Lately I’ve been exploring the idea of psychology and emotional well-being, particularly what can be revealed in a person’s expression and body language when defining features are hidden. Whilst exploring this idea I have primarily been experimenting with covering the subjects eyes, as eyes are often used for identification purposes, I wanted to see what could still be evident, or emphasised more so when you can no longer connect to such a huge focal point. I have my own interpretation of the result of this experiment, but I like to leave that comment for the viewer, as they are the true interpreter of my work. I always use photographic references when painting portraits. A lot of my photo references come from Instagram and are not randomly selected. I am particularly drawn in and inspired by photography that reveals a psychological emotion. This work has been created on canvas, which has been stretched over thin board (not made by me). I then backed the piece myself using thin pine which has been cut down to fit the backing perimeter of the painting frame. Hanging pieces not included, but as this work is so light and small I would suggest a small picture frame hook or nail in the wall to support the existing backing for the piece. Satin picture varnish is added on completion to seal the work.

Beth Wyn is an Australian born artist currently living in Auckland, New Zealand. She dabbles in abstract and portrait painting, both applied with an expressive painterly style. She enjoys experimenting with colour and shape, adding unnatural colours to the human form and shapes to test boundaries and draw the eye to the obscurity of the characters she aims to portray. She primarily uses acrylic paint on stretched canvas, preferring the shortened drying time to oil so as to quickly layer up in a wet on wet method. Photographs are used often as a reference, and inspire the patterns and colours that evolve in her paintings.
