The work was initially produced in 2008, however, as often happens, I wasn’t satisfied with the result because I couldn’t help finding faults as my original line hatching technique improved and progressed. I eventually completed this work in late 2015. As I often create works with a “fallen leaves” motif, so is this work. For me, portraying the fallen leaves is not a mere depiction of autumnal essence, but my attempt to symbolise the concept of fragility and dignity of life, mortality, and vicissitude of civilisation. I finished the work with extra care, with my original line hatching method as elaborate and delicate as possible. It is my interpretation of the concept of the Still Life genre and to enhance the concept, I painted a single snail amongst the leaves as the Still-Life old masters used to paint various insects alongside the flowers and plants. During the Renaissance, snails were often used to symbolise resurrection, purity and mortality. Hence, the work titled "Autumn Shade".

Hideyuki Sobue (b. 1965) lives and works in the Lake District, UK, yet grew up as an orphan in Aichi, Japan. Working with drawing and painting, two historic media that have served as a fundamental means of communication since prehistoric times, he explores the unbroken line in the relationship between art and humanity. Sobue uses an entirely original brush hatching technique employing Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. Created through a fusion of influences - the concept of Disegno in the Florentine school of the Renaissance, oriental artistic heritage and neurological studies - Sobue’s medium attempts to create a platform bridging east and west, and explore the interdisciplinary approach related to the human act of seeing. Sobue has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Japan. Notable exhibitions include “A Letter to the Earth from Beatrix” commissioned by the National Trust and supported by Arts Council England
