About The Artwork

Great paintings comes from artists most in tune with the evolutionary process. If the many layers of paint over paint could be pealed off, "Back Drop" would reveal the evolution of imagery becoming another imagery as the artist took pains to search for this painting to have a life of its own. Jim Abuan began with images on magazines pages, adhering entire pages to cover the canvas and avoid the appearance of cutting out imagery as done with collage. Any text were painted over except for the pictures thought to be useful and integrated "into" the painting as if they were painted by the artist. As the painting developed there were versions where the magazine imagery became an obstacle to the direction the painting was headed and there was a risky decision to paint them out. The overall intention was to create imagery without having a dependency on realism for recognizable imagery in the painting, thus the symbolic style seem to lend itself as far as integrating with the abstractness of paint manipulation. However, with that said, there remains vestiges of magazine imagery. The artist states, "Evolution is a constant process and this painting shows evidence of transition in its material surface along with the multi-level state the imagery occupies - and from the tactile to the illusionary qualities." This painting has wire on the back and ready to hang. It also has strip framing that is white and looks elegant.
