Bayou Alligator Study Painting

The gentle nature of alligators coexisting with the other denizens of their natural habitat, the swamps and bayous of the Southern United States, inspired the composition and color palette of this piece. Despite their status as apex predators, alligators are also important protectors and facilitators of natural processes in their environments. Their strength and cunning is balanced by their tranquil nature when engaging in passivity. The alligator in this piece is hiding many of its sharp teeth under the water, unwilling to break the surface tension unless a threat or a meal presents itself. The inherent softness of the watercolor medium lends a more gentle affectation to an animal often feared.
