About The Artwork

12x12”, mixed media on wood panel. I chose to work with Encaustic(Beeswax and resin) because the multiple semi-transparant layers emanate an ethereal glow like no other medium I have ever experienced. There was a creek that ran through the yard near my childhood home. I remember so vividly the smell of the thick rich mud that squished between my toes as I waded through the deepest parts, holding hands with my sister. The tadpoles that tickled our toes and legs made me nervous because I was afraid of the large, creaking bullfrogs; one had jumped and surprised me, scrambling along my foot before hopping away. My sister held on tight to my hand and reassured me as we waded together on that sticky Summer morning.

Karen Haub is a Southern California based mixed media artist drawn to intuitive landscapes and figures. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and has shown her work in numerous galleries in Southern California. Karen has sold work throughout the U.S. and internationally since 2014. Karen interprets her landscapes and figures through a variety of materials including oil, charcoal, and cold wax. The brushwork, mark making, and dripping techniques she uses in her intuitive landscapes, figures, and seascapes, suggest the passage of time, and her plein air works are a tribute to the enduring, ethereal essence of natural landscapes untouched by industrialization and urban sprawl. The collaborative work that she does with found object artist, Lynn Dodge is focused on bringing awareness to viewers about the destruction of the environment and environmental issues we all face as inhabitants of a dying planet. The earthy, textural elements of each painting combined with the upcycled, found object elements, bring a keen awareness to the viewer that our planet is covered with discarded objects that pollute our environment both in the manufacturing and in the disposal of them.
