We are sensitive energies in space intermingling with each other. We take on energies whether we choose to or not. Some of this energy affects us in ways that are hard to recognize before it’s too late. We start to take on traits and habits that seem like it’s “not us”. We lose ourselves in others because we see what we want that we do not currently possess. We give up our reigns to allow them to guide us to where they think we should be. Losing our own direction, we succumb to someone else’s plans for our life. We start to mold into what they want us to be. We start to become something foreign to our own identity. Then, our guide decides to leave us along the way because they’ve gotten us to where they want us - the most vulnerable state. A place where we have lost sight of our own vision and will plead for them to stay - giving away our internal power. We cannot let other people be the guide to our life with their visions, goals, dreams, and preferences. Our power relies in taking ahold of our life and saying “this is who I am and this is where I am going” without the influence of other people trying to derail our progress.

Salina Mendoza is a Mexican and Taíno American artist who's work is associated with minimalism, hard-edge painting, and repetitive use of lines. Her work is inspired by uncomfortable emotions observed in the real world, brain vibrations, repetition, color, and mental health. Currently, Salina is a curator and partner at Low Key Gallery in Downtown Santa Ana, CA. She is the founder and managing director of Artist Safespaces, a non-profit who designates public and private safespaces for artists to do live art for free. She is the 2019 OC Laureate and works closely with several Orange County municipalities to organize their art communities. Salina also splits her time between art and tech as a Senior Product Manager for one of the leading primary ticketing platforms in the US.
