Discovering the reed-beds Melvyn was inspired by the colours and textures of the grass and British habitat. Inspiration was also drawn from the juxtaposition of the reeds against the blue colours and soft textures found in the birds plumage. The viewer can be drawn into the intimacy of the birds habitat and the privacy in their secretive world. The paintings uses rich umbers and ochres coupled with the complimentary colours of the birds. The textures found in canvas, brush work with oils, communicate the gentle yet detailed dramatic aspect of the tits and their habitat.
