About The Artwork

The second version of L. Frank Baum's character, the Cowardly Lion, I have rendered, was inspired by an idea my mother in-law had. The golden lion peeking through a thick crop of leaves, his eyes twinkling, the forest dark. The lion's mane was inspired by hair product advertisements from the 70's. One hand painted ad in particular that influenced me at the time, depicted a Farrah Fawcett-esque model looking very haughty down her nose, from a net of shadows, her golden locks catching tiny threads of light. The forest, deep, cool, with leaves that twinkle like shards of emerald glass were the features that emerged gradually from my mind. You never know where you will find inspiration, something that will entirely change or influence where a piece will go. Often music has given shape to the elements of a painting, the setting, the mood, a character, the action, or lack of it. I hadn't pictured the forest as an ominous, bewitching thing, until I heard the eerie trailing hum of the theremin in the soundtrack for Alfred Hitchcock's, Spellbound. The leaves turned dark, and the shadows took over. Beads of light gleamed in the depths. There are tints of blue that bleed into yellow green, and all is overgrown and alive, while the lion's eyes burn orange and amber.
