I had worked so incredibly hard to start my own wedding cake business, it took 8 years of blood sweat and tears. The Covid pandemic hit the events industry so hard that I had to make the heartbreaking decision to close my business. I felt lost, and trying to continue with my need for creative expression I started painting, viciously. I was struggling for weeks to find a subject matter that would speak to my rage and frustration, but everything seemed to fall short. So I decided to layer paint in expressive abstraction, the paint being an outpouring of my inner most self. This process has been fuelled by ambivalence, rage, disappointment, frustration, and grief - which has led to depictions of electric excitement as death flows into rebirth, and fuelled a rediscovery of the joys of texture, nuances, and movement. The paintings are visual narratives - a juxtaposition of the despair, hopelessness, rage and frustration; and a new-found hope for passionate expression. The paintings are meant to draw you in, to make really make the viewer gaze deeper into the painting, and into themselves. The painting is varnished with a Satin varnish for light-fastness and durability. The edges of the canvas are painted black. The painting has a sawtooth picture hanger in the back, for easy installation.

My name is Elli and I was born and raised in Germany, moved to the UK for 2 years after school and have been living in Johannesburg for the past 12 years. I studied Fine Arts at Wits and used my artistic knowledge to start my own bespoke wedding-cake business. Due to the pandemic and major restrictions on events the business was closed after 8 years during which I became the top wedding-cake designer in South Africa. As I mourned the loss of my edible canvas I rediscovered painting. This process has been fuelled by ambivalence, rage, disappointment, frustration, and grief - which has led to depictions of electric excitement as death flows into rebirth and a rediscovery of the joys of texture, nuances, and movement. My paintings are visual narratives - a juxtaposition of the despair, hopelessness, rage and frustration; and a new-found hope for passionate expression.
