About The Artwork

The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts. Following in this tradition, I have adopted appropriation as a theme in my art. A medium to address my urban observations and a kind of remix of culture. With this work I have created a visual dialogue with the works of Leger. Armed with my electric router, I've extricated each motif away from its rectangular straight edges. A new space absorbed in a new sequence thereby initiating a 'choreography' of colour and rhythmic repetition.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Rachel Rovay is a contemporary artist; her thematic focus is on the experience of living in and around Melbourne’s urban environment. My art practice is based on observation, investigation, and wonderment. I find inspiration in the street corner, outdoor cafes, botanical gardens, backyards, interiors, and our everyday life. My art seeks to connect the sensibility of nature and re-engage the viewer with its essence. The element of surprise keeps me absorbed through the discovery of the unique and the illuminating. The principles of colour and shape are critical in my work as both create a positive response to our structured lives. A pictorial impact creating a sense of energy, much like the sun stimulating new life within an ecosystem. Innovative art methods allow me to explore the wilderness of thought and perception. An awareness of the ordinary, drawing attention to our connection to the urban space, the day-to-day common place. The unremarkable becomes and transforms into the extraordinary.
