About The Artwork

This is an original unframed work painted in gouache on watercolour paper. It is part of a series inspired initially by the sunlight shining through a green blind in Granada. The series has the title "Open to few", from the words of the poet Pedro Soto de Rojas, "A paradise closed to many, a garden open to few." When I lived in Granada I would walk in the afternoons and look through wrought iron bars or a half open door into the enclosed gardens (Carmen) where I could glimpse a beautiful, unreachable paradise. The paintings have many physical layers of paint, and the earlier layers have been washed off and another layer painted on top. This gives the paintings a great depth and power even though they are painted in a medium associated with delicacy. They look best mounted very simply in a frame but no mount. The paper should fixed slightly raised from the support card and the glass held in a slight box frame so as not to touch the paper. Then the paper can be seen in all its beauty, including the edges.

Susan Mowbray is a Madrid based artist who uses the traditional medium of drawing and painting to explore ideas of femininity. Her work treads a fine line between collusion and subversion, figuration and abstraction, tradition and the contemporary. She works in series, working in books, on paper and on found material. She sees the direct physical act of drawing as akin to face to face conversation. It is a simple, humble and taken for granted activity of personal connection that is very important in our age of highly mediated technology. She exhibits in Spain and the UK.
