About The Artwork

Starting a painting is usually an interesting process. Knowing I will never end up where I start, with all intentions I set for a loose yet specific path and bravely face the flat blank canvas. I started this painting by glueing a copper etching print onto primed and stretched linen. For a number of years, I coveted this print, not knowing what to do with it. After a couple of lightly drafted versions, I liked the overlay of colors, depicting the sense of a white picket fence the figure now moves beyond. While taking a break, it occurred to me that my daughter who had come back to reside with me during COVID 2020, is now longing to resume her independence, and break free once again, and leave all else behind.

I'm fascinated by the essence of painting itself—its process, how the paint moves on the canvas, and the vivid expressiveness of colors and textures that create a tangible and emotional bridge between my work and the viewer. The layers of paint invite you into a world of sensation and meaning that's yours to interpret. My approach often involves revisiting and reworking the canvas, much like the way relationships evolve and renew over time. My art reflects my journey—my introspections, connections with others, and, fundamentally, my relationship with painting itself. Human figures frequently emerge in my work, symbolizing the universal experiences of emotion, values, encounters, and the passage of time. These figures capture fleeting moments, bridging the present with the memory of a distant, earlier self. While I play with the balance between reality and imagination, I also embrace the unpredictable, using it to capture your attention and keep you engaged. A recurring theme in my work is visibility, particularly reflecting on my identity as a woman navigating a phase of life that often feels overlooked by society. It's this struggle for visibility, for recognition, that resonates through my art, connecting with viewers on a profoundly personal level.
