Lithuanians in the United Kingdom, like the British, are especially fond of flair for their specially designed car numbers. With both impudent and patriotic slogans ornate vehicles are often decorated with national attributes, such as the Lithuanian tricolor or Vytis, the coat of arms of Lithuania. This kind of patriotism for Lithuanian or Russian speaking emigrants may be costly, but not in terms of penalties. Last year, the country's government issued a list of 46 pages, which include prohibited combinations of numbers and letters on car numbers. It has been decided that swearwords, religious terms, abusive language, names of intimate body parts, and similar terms on the car number plate hurt others and therefore can’t be displayed publicly. This prohibition, however, applies only to English words that are on the list, such as VA61 ANA, BLO3 JOB, I5 LAM, AL14 LAH, and the like. Meanwhile, Lithuanians who are cursing their native language bypass this prohibition, since word and number combinations are not British, so officials do not understand them and do not consider them offensive. For example, the UK driver would not be able to choose the P15 OFF combination for his car number, which means the same as a car decorating PI5K NX in Lithuanian. However, the latter is not English, so the list of prohibited combinations does not apply. The same applies to numbers such as K333 KSE (whore) or P444 DLA (bastard). © 15min.lt.
