Art Description

Painting: Acrylic on Canvas, Wood.

After watching the Ken Burns documentary about Jazz, my heart yearned to honor these greats as I feel they should be. Billie Holiday was a tough lady. I like to keep it "real" as to why I painted her. She was very successful but plagued by alcoholism and a lover who may not have treated her like the queen she was. The toughness came out one evening as a drunk sailor put his cigarette butt out on her fur coat. It took several men to pull her off of the sailor as she beat him for his infraction. The racial tension and obstacles these musicians faced is further reason we as a country should honor and respect such an eclectic innovative groups of musical geniuses.
