About The Artwork

The Mnemosyne project includes a series of paintings in which symbol and game play a fundamental role. In mythology Mnemosyne is the muse of memory and remembering, the mother of all muses, thus including art. Taking this by analogy, a green line connects my works — symbolising as well the processuality of lifetime, but also a forest as a unifying concept in the manifoldness of intuition, a space that contains all four elements: earth, water, air and fire. Mnemosyne as a subject in art fascinates me, because of its holistic vision of an inter-penetration of space and time, an often used concept in art and aesthetics (Warburg, Hegel, Gadamer). In this sense the Mnemosyne project has two concerns: On the one hand the paintings are a metaphor, referring to the subject, to the very individual process of remembering and memorising — on the other hand this subjective and individual perspective is generalized to make painting and art a subject themselves. An unavoidable precondition in a time after the „lost self-evidence of art” (Adorno). Facing this provocation — the artist in modern times becomes (and stays) the playing child of our memories, finding itself continuously in this unknown space of untouchable ideas, trying to materialise them without a prefixed aim. This game, i say, makes the difference between the artist and the philosopher. The project started as a reflection on the four stages of life: birth, childhood, youth and maturity. Each of these stages is correlated with an element of nature and with a certain color. From this arose the paintings Forest and Unknown. The process of reflection pushed even further to the creation of a work that encompasses all these colours, stages and elements in my latest painting Îngerul timpului.
Birth enters in a connection with earth — when the being is not yet materialised and just an intuition of what it could potentially be. Childhood is white — like a game of two children and see it close to air. Youth is dynamic — moral values appear and define the personality. This struggle is correlated with water that tries to find its way through. Maturity is when the soul has already accumulated experience, it’s the moment of burning, when people offer to society, when the fruits are collected, when they see what they actually became. The next step is confused in the fog. The end of life can not be conceive, but exist the hope that it will continue in another form. Pink appears also, the soul is pink, but it turns into another work in a more subtle color in gold. The paintings are inspired by photographs from childhood, deconstructed. Exist the fascination for the dense pictorial matter, sometimes mixed with earth. The canvas and paper are attacked with a combination of artificial and natural colours (earth, flour, bricks). Anyhow, in this game of art, the artist still believes in the social importance of art in general and therefore in the artist’s moral responsibility. While struggling with social categories and conventions the artist’s game opens the time and space for reflection - not as a mirror for the individual and the society, but as an „orientation in existence” (Klee).
