ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting brings together in an abstract way all my indignation at the murder of Rio de Janeiro's councilwoman, Marielle Franco, and of all the black people who were cowardly killed in Brazil and in the world. The Marielle case, which has been unsolved for three years, is especially important because she was a human rights defender and because it was a political crime. Here, the life of black people is worth so little that the barbaric murder of a black councilwoman was carried out by ex-policemen who were neighbors of the president of the country. However, one question remains, who ordered the Marielle Franco murder? Everything is connected!! Black lives matter!!! Mixed technique art on 80x60 cm canvas.

Born in São Paulo, but raised in Rio de Janeiro, artist Gerard Laurence has always had contact with art from an early age thanks to his family of actors, but painting only entered his life later. Journalist with 20 years of career, he worked for the main media outlets in Brazil such as TV Globo and Jornal Lance. Later, he graduated in gastronomy, working for a short period in some reputable restaurants. All this experience influenced and continues to be an important part of the artist's production. Therefore, his artistic work, at this time, has been noted for political and social issues with scathing and relevant criticism, such as he can be seen in the series of paintings "Nature in Danger" which is being shown at the European and Latin American Biennial of Arts in Finland, but he also has an aptitude for portraying the human condition and the grandeur of nature in an exercise in humility. Gerard has a strong connection with the color palette of his works that serves as a crucial tool in the artistic and communicative process between him and the audience. The artist lives in a process where striking colors, abstract shapes and shadows are related between reality and fantasy.
