Art Description

Painting: Acrylic, Enamel on Other.

Black Swan Raw in Black and Orange, 7th in the Black Swan Raw series. Continuing from my swan anatomy research, I painted the first one as part of the 'Weight and Power' project. Originally starting with research into vast container ships, an image that gives a sense of ore in it's incredible engineering and scale. I began to paint parts of ships to capture this feeling. Not liking anything I had done so far I decided to completely switch my approach. I started using metaphors rather than a literal interpretation. The first Maersk Swan portrayed this using bold lettering, neatly painted and the image of the ever epic swan from a side view showing the engineering in it's wings. This was painted in a very rough style directly onto unprimed linen, it was sketching with paint rather than painting. Liking this style which came about from an experiment I decided to do a second of the same image but only using the sketch style. Black Swan Raw in Black. I then painted a third, using the same image but changing one element. This gave me the idea for the series, to repeat the same image, changing one element in each. This developed into a range of colours and optimising technique for painting the feathers. Black Swan Raw in Blue and White was the first where I decided to radically enhance the swan by giving it a fill.
Painted in 3 major layers, firstly sketching the image in the usual way, the second was to roughly apply the colours, using hard surfaces to smear and blend the wet paint as well as a brush. The third stage was to tidy up the mess I had made with a fine brush, picking out detail in the feather formations.
