Painting: Oil on Wood.
This is the second version of a composition using crumpled paper billowing out of a box, the first was titled “Rise” In this second version I referenced a painting in the National Gallery London by Jacques Louis David. The painting is a portrait of Jacob Blauw, a Dutch merchant. On close inspection, I realised that blue was evident in most of the colours in the portrait and that this may have been a light hearted reference to/ pun on the sitters name, Blauw being Dutch for blue. My painting uses the same approach to colour and the crumpled paper also bears a tenuous resemblance to the ruffle of his shirtfront.
