This painting is made by drawing lines with expressive and spontaneous action and the resulting marks are then interpreted into colour and shapes. In this sense the art work is an expressive piece which is bounded by feeling and instinct, yet also has a thoughtful and considered aspect on how it will be eventually completed. As in many of the art works I produce, the imagery which gradually manifests and unfolds, reveals symbols or signs that lead to personal interpretations of meaning. The painting was made during the beginnings of spring, and many have said that a bird head shape, (maybe a woodpecker), appears in the top right half of the composition. The idea of the title 'Blue Ritual' comes from research into myths about birds, (especially the Woodpecker), and the relationship they have in British folk-law. The Woodpecker is also revered by the Native American Indians and is often seen carved into totem poles. The photographs you see of a the framed art work show how the painting might look if presented in that way. The painting itself comes in a roll, and is backed on heavyweight, quality fibre-paper so you may frame the work in a way that suits you.

My interest in art started at an early age. I remember seeing books at home where I grew up in the 1970's. The books were about impressionism, surrealism and my favourite showed art from the DADA movement. In my teens I became obsessed with Andy Warhol and it was at this point that I realised making art was what I wanted to do. The Paintings you see on my Saatchi Art platform are in chronological order. The first paintings were made in 2018. They were created very precisely and accurately and are influenced by minimalist ideas. Through 2019 my work moved away from minimalist abstractions and started to veer more towards an expressionist style. Through 2020 and going into 2021, I am exploring ideas that attempt to strike a balance between a minimalist mindset and the spontaneity of an expressionist. The paintings are created using acrylic on heavyweight paper and sometimes I use charcoal, graphite and oil pastel. In the next few month I will be starting to execute my larger paintings on canvas.
