For many years landscape, our connection to place and how we think about the genre of landscape painting has been the subject of my work. Notions of landscape and our passage through it have been formulating in my consciousness since childhood. I feel a deep connection to landscape but as a self -declared ‘city girl’, I'm interested in how this might have come about - was it the endless drives up the Hume between home and my grandparent’s home, the long drives to the annual camping spot, or was it more ingrained, something innate even?' As a painter first and foremost with a passion for materials, my work is as interested in the idea of bringing beauty into being as it is considering ideas about how landscape is experienced today in this fast-paced world where the gap between the land and our experience of it grows ever larger. Painting for me is partly an act of discovery. Subjective meanings - which often become clearer well after the painting has been - and the actual process of making the work inform the outcome. More than any pre-determined idea of exactly how a painting will turn out in the end. While oil paint is my primary medium, I will often use the same source image to create a different interpretation in watercolour, or charcoal with the final work driven by where the materials themselves take me, guided by years of practice and experience. My works tend to the impressionistic and expressive, with colour, luminosity and strong compositional elements imbuing the viewer with sensory experiences. The subject matter remains universal, and the ‘ah ha’ moment of recognition when a viewer links the image to their own experiences is a particular delight.
