Painting: Oil, Paint on Canvas.
My practice emerges from the fascination of the found photograph. I paint from old photographs that I find in flea markets and antique shops around England. I am drawn to the ambiguity of the people in the photographs, each one begs a fiction. By painting from them, I am saving the moment into something that will last longer than a crumpled old photograph. They are turning this moment from the past into a solid present object, something with fixed dimensions.
I want to attempt to trigger a feeling or memory within the viewer by using old evocative imagery to cross the boundary between nostalgia and the anticipation of the unknown. The paintings become strange fictions that blur the boundary between document and storytelling.
