About The Artwork

This is a painting of a man who rode past me on his bike in Brixton, London, last summer. I made a really quick drawing before he disappeared in to the distance. Then I made this painting. The painting is delivered canvas only giving you the option to hang as just the canvas or to place the canvas within a tray frame if you wish.

Joshua Armitage (b. 1986 West Yorkshire) graduated from the Royal College of Art, London. His work mainly consists of painting and drawing but expands to include experimental film making and collage. After studying at the Royal College of Art, he became increasingly interested in the ideas and philosophies of artists like Roy Oxlade, Robert Henri and David Bomberg. What he looks for in his work is something akin to the work of Matisse or Degas in that he wants the work to be immediate whilst also absorbing, it needs to be created with the least manipulation. Confidence is essential and needs to be seen within the image. If a mark is made with an unsure hand it will appear as an unsure mark in a picture. Drawing is key and is a practice that he constantly exercises. All of these points go some way towards conveying an honest portrayal of experience. His work is also informed by his own personal history, and his relationship with his experiences. He aims to find the beauty in the overlooked and common place. A kind of meditation on the quiet subtleties or the strangeness of the everyday. Joshua Armitage has work represented in private collections in the USA, Canada, around Europe and Africa.
