Broken Smile

The dapper gentleman in Broken Smile comes to us by the brush of Kris Gebhardt, mixed-media artist. Like many of Gebhardt’s paintings, this one explores life on the downside of 50. Similar to other leading men in his works, our guy has seen triumphs, trials and tribulations, and is struggling to hold onto his zest for life. His misshapen ears, broken nose and thinning hair are evidence that his second half isn’t panning out on the field as he thought it should. He is as beat up and worn out, the spark has been extinguished and his spirit has all but turned out the lights and gone home.

The turned up corner of his mouth and broad shoulders might indicate there is a fraction of some gumption left in our hero. Recycled cardboard mounted to wood is the perfect canvas for this subject and lets us know there is just enough juice left in that broken smile to end the game with dignity.
