ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Asking myself the question "Why am I called Black when brown ?" inspired me through this piece. The racist and wrong depiction of "black" people in ads, cartoons, and Minstrel shows use the black pigment as the color of African skin. I have now continued to discover the definition of the word Black versus White and use the color to allude to stereotypes of African people and the literal classification of race. I want the viewers to question the perspective of the mad in the painting. Where would he fall? is he the correct direction? Is he placing himself into his own situation? is he trying to get out? I chose to paint his skin more realistically than everything else in the entire painting so that it is the main focus. I want to key into whats real and not real. The setting is also looking into a stage in a theater.
