About The Artwork

My cat Spike loves, loves to sit in buckets peaking out and trying to play with any unsuspecting passerby. Not sure why or where this habit came from? Spike and his siblings had been abandoned by the side of the road. I happened to be out for a run along a dirt road with one of my huskies and she noticed movement in the grass. We stopped and looked. Four small kittens had been left to fend for themselves. All of them black except for Spike who is a tuxedo kitty. I brought them home, and they now live on our farm happily. Spike is a wonderful model who inhabits numerous paintings. His contrasting colors make him a perfect subject. His black coat can be painted any shades of blues, or purples. In addition when adding complementary colors to cool shades, a color vibration is created. This makes him the perfect model.

Kaija Savinainen is a professional artist whose studio is near Canada’s capital, Ottawa. She earned her Fine Art degree from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, taught by an inspiring group of professors originally from the US, and UK who built that exemplary program. There, she excelled at painting, printmaking and drawing and received several studio awards and a faculty commission. She graduated with Great Distinction and was awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Her Nordic ancestral roots have given her a strong affinity for the environment. Her paintings offer insights into nature’s vulnerability but also, it’s aesthetic beauty. As she states, “Through my art I stimulate the viewer’s sense of where we are going with what nature has bestowed upon us. Nature needs our respect, and care more than ever these days”. Savinainen belongs to The Ten Collective, a group of artists who exhibit annually to rave review in the Ottawa area and online. Her works have been purchased by several universities, and the Alberta Art Foundation, and are in private collections in USA, Canada, Japan, and Europe.
