ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This colorful, floral still life oil painting was inspired by the feeling of playfulness and wonder. The artwork started with my friend bringing the blue and white bucket filled with spring clippings from flowering trees. We were deciding what kind of "vase" to put them in so we could paint and both decided the blue and white pale was quite fun! The pale reminded me of my daughter and the child like wonder and sense of spontaneity of creating with sand at the beach. As the painting started to unfold the bucket became this surprising and unexpected part of the artwork that gave it a unique playful expression. In creating the painting I used a full palette of interesting and equally unexpected colors. While there are elements of reality in the artwork the painting also embraces a lot of imagination. Vibrant and varied brushwork captures the spontaneous energy and texture of nature. This is evident in the background, the flowering petals and other parts of the painting. The palette of blues, pinks and oranges play along in an exciting way with shades of white, soft greens and violets. Simple lines and silhouettes add to the contemporary nature of the artwork and it's unique style. I painted this on a gallery wrapped canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang unframed, but can be framed.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
