Budapest: Voids of Pest 2 Painting

As artist in residence in Budapest I started working bigger, though with a sustained focus to small-scale details. This series was inspired by all the vacant lots in Pest. I wondered about their histories and futures, though their present state also has presence. All still used in some way, these spaces express something about the city’s identity and soul. The artworks are built out of cut and painted pages from the Magyarorszag Utikonyvek, a Communist-era travel book describing all the historic/architectural tourist sites of Hungary. The technique of building with colour strips gives the image both vibration and structure.
