acrylic colour on handmade Thai mulberry paper (kada sa), deckled edge, 21 x 31 in., 55 x 77 cm. While working on something else… I found this sketch I did years ago of Burmese style Buddha image, statue, and I got inspired. Here I'm creating the rustic, dusty look one can find in some of the old temples. And the painting should have a parchment look and feel to it. Gold is a colour often associated with these things so I started with gold.... paint that is... the rest just flowed out. The Burmese Buddha image tends to be of white marble like stone, hence the white instead of a more common gold statue. I use a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It’s a thick parchment like paper, strong yet pliable. The paper is made to this size to get the unique, uneven deckled edges which adds to the overall textural effect. This page is strongly textured so the textural effect is even more. The close up pictures are to get a feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s the work in progress. And that’s me with the painting for perspective. I used romanised pali language in the title to keep it in context with the ‘Buddhist’ theme... Buddha image is the translation. Interested to have your idea painted in this style? Maybe a storyboard collage from a recent travel, an architectural scene, an icon, portrait? Contact me. For the purpose of this print I have cropped away the uneven ‘deckled edges’. About framing this painting. When considering framing bear in mind to not cover up the deckled edges. This is one of the specialties of the painting, one of its charms. It is best displayed framed with a cut mat board around the painting so as not to cover the edges, thereby putting some space between the art and the glass and bringing depth to the framed art.

Malaysia
I'm Canadian born now residing in Malaysia. I've been working professionally as an artist since 1980 ish… time flies. I have exhibited my paintings in Vancouver and coastal B.C., Bangkok, Singapore & Malaysia, areas I’ve lived in over time. Now I do it all online. I’ve traveled extensively over the years and you’ll see that people, places and cultures are a recurring theme in my art. I attach importance to papers I use for my paintings. Some are done on acid free watercolour papers, from 180lb weight to 300lb. I also use handmade parchment type papers. These are thick yet pliable, strong, with deckled edge that add to the look of my paintings. I’m still a passionate guy. I’m passionate about life and people, passionate about art and painting. And I feel really at my best when I’m putting all these things down on paper. I only wish I had more time to delve into all these activities of mine. But I work with what I have. My health sucks so I’m slowing down. And there's more: book illustration, portrait, comic strip, caricature. I also work with camera and computer, to create the images brush strokes just can't deliver. So follow my brush work and hopefully you’ll find that special painting meant just for you.
