I combined the three separate paintings together as a triptych under the one title. This is my thoughts about the meaning of empty space related to the place to escape. In their latest works, Emilia And Ilya Kabakov consider ‘empty space’ by using a white hole/gap in order to symbolise ‘a place to escape’. I would draw a line under these works as representing the end of the discussion of ‘the void’ in Russian art; from the Soviet avant-garde experiments with ‘empty space’ to the building of the ‘aesthetics of the void’ in the Kabakovs works of the 2000’s, the discussion moved to an acceptance of the impossibility of utopia. Trying to develop my current knowledge about the void and colour white, I painted a triptych. In this work I considered an empty unfinished space as a place to escape; on the right canvas of the triptych I thought how I might reverse the feelings of emptiness and hopelessness into feelings of freedom and hope, and took a chance to represent my own meaning of empty space and the colour white.
