ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is clearly representing two horses, defined by a geometric style, respectively in gold and light blue colour, that are standing on a surface decorated with an oriental style; but they are not just two magnificent animals, they represent more than that: I have chosen the horse as a symbol of union between East and West, inspired by the horses of San Marco, originally born as Byzantine works that have become emblems of Venice. My love for oriental art and western culture is represented by the choice of decorations, which are inspired by the ornaments of majolica and fabrics. These arts have been meeting points between the two worlds during all history.

Luigi Ballarin has begun his artistic career in the 90s in his homeland, Venice; in 2000 he moved to Rome and, after an invitation for a personal exhibition, he fell in love with Istanbul and started to work there. Luigi's art is a union between East and West and summarizes in iconic images the suggestions of the minor arts, which travelled the paths of trade and travelers, and merged the different traditions: the decorations of majolica, enamels of goldsmiths, embroideries of precious fabrics. He currently lives and works in the three cities, creating a union between different cultures with a unique artistic language and painting techniques, characterized by material backgrounds, which evoke mosaics, enamels, ceramic decorations, carpets. Luigi continually offers us the two souls: that of birth and that of election. There is nothing more Venetian in this. Venice gives birth to you and then pushes you out to seek the other from you, only to find him next door when you return home, in a spiral of encounter and re-encounter.
