The significance isn't outside of the work or preceding it; it's within it. The paintings express her perception of the world reduced to the marrow, down to the essential lines that compose a semblance or a skeleton. It's a kind of expressionism, an internal response to the stimulus of reality: children, men, old women of Bolivia, India, Peru, Morocco, Buenos Aires where Barbara has traveled, studied or lived within their cultures. The viewer is presented with the bodies and eyes of the world.
