My Current paintings are an inquiry into colour, light, form and illusory space, which reference Modernist abstraction and perceptions of Colour and atmospheric light The ‘Chroma Shape’ series contrasts blended (oil gradient) colour shifts with hard edged abstraction. This inquiry into colour, shape and light, set’s up a colour conversation within my paintings, informed by a number of colour references, such as signatures observed within nature, atmospheric light, colour theory and modernist movements such as constructivism, Orphism and The Colour field painters.

Artist Statement Caroline List’s recent paintings and sculptural works are an inquiry into colour, light, form and illusory space, exploring the opticality of simultaneous colour contrast and its emotive visual impact. “Working on linen, board, paper and aluminium Caroline List creates luminous paintings full of sensuous hues that explore the spatial qualities of colour in relationship to form and ground, defined by their differing absorbances. Drawing on early 20th century abstraction and virtual screen photography her work implicitly refers to landscapes, organic shapes and atmospheric light. Using high key pigments and fluorescents full of transparency and opacity her works, despite their sophisticated geometry, create links to the saturated colour fields of Rothko and the spiritual, other worldly light of Caspar David Friedrich.” Review ‘Shape Chroma’ Artlyst – Sue Hubbard (2021) Recent work is categorised into three series, ‘Chroma Shape’, ‘Chroma Sphere’ and ‘Light Chroma ’, which reference both Modernist geometric abstraction and the spatial language of landscape. The perception of colour and space is explored through atmospheric light shifts, seen in contrast to hard edged shapes, this push and pull of the picture plane suggests distant horizons or colourscapes, an exploration of depth of field, form, and ground. This play with the optically of the picture plane and the tricks of painting make reference to the infinite, the sublime. Framing devices such as the Renaissance tondo, tromp l’oeil and Modernist compositional conventions have informed this series.
