Painting: Oil, Spray Paint, Household, Marker, Enamel on Paper.
There is a direction of vibrancy in Rowell’s paper series, focusing upon the simplified objects with outlandish tones. The work is produced by an initial wash of oil paint to the background, creating a fluid movement within the work. Geometric form and tone is then applied and allows for the fluid backdrop to be continually questioned through the abstract form. The contrast of colours against an unsettling wash of oil paint, allows for a movement of colour that approves of a continual variation in compositional direction. The work is kept in handmade frames, allowing for the smallest details to be refined.
Inspiration comes from the work of Wassily Kandinsky's colour theory, in which the depth and movement of tone is continually questions. The structure of Kasimir Malevich's painting plays a crucial part in the composition of the work, looking to balance the abstraction.
