Calla Lily Painting

My mom had a whole patch of these in our garden and I remember as a little girl spending literally hours looking at them. I can still remember how excited I got every time I saw a new one. Their perfection never seized to amaze me! I used to have them in my own garden, but they have been removed since we discovered that they are highly poisonous to humans and animals. Although the Calla lily originated in South Africa and Malawi, it has been very popular around the world since ancient times. Calla means ‘beautiful’ in Greek and the obsession extends to Roman Mythology – Venus felt so threatened by its beauty that she cursed the flower to decrease its appeal. The curse produced the yellow spike in the centre. No wonder the Calla lily has inspired many artworks over the centuries! I am fascinated by the beauty and magnificence of God’s creation and try to capture the essence thereof. Luke 12:27 - Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin.
