ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The artwork is an abstract painting that prominently features expressive brushstrokes and a combination of vivid colors. At the center, a simplified, outline sketch of a camel is drawn in white, adding a symbolic or focal element to the composition. The camel, typically associated with desert landscapes and journeys, evokes a sense of endurance or adventure. The colors used in the painting are bold and dynamic, with heavy use of golden yellow, orange, blue, and black. The yellow and orange hues create a sense of warmth and movement, applied in dripping, fluid strokes that cascade down and across the canvas. Contrasting these warm tones are dark black sections that create a deep backdrop, while accents of blue add a cooler balance. The words “RICHES TO RICHES” are inscribed at the top and bottom, contributing a textual element that suggests themes of wealth, cycles, or continuity. The phrase could imply an exploration of materialism, fate, or a philosophical reflection on the beginning and end being the same. The overall mood of the painting is energetic, with its abstract style and vibrant color palette conveying emotion and intensity. The use of text alongside abstract elements creates an interplay between language and imagery, inviting multiple interpretations.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
