Camus Swale Painting

This work is inspired by the landscape of Oregon. Oregon is characterized by rolling green hills, buttes, and expansive farm fields that are multicoloured and majestic. The cumulus clouds of Oregon create vast shadows that fall against the highly forested countryside. I am hoping that viewers will feel the solidity and subtle monumentalism of this Oregon scene. There is a "gravitas" that arises from the arrangement of the macchie that is at the same time natural and majestic. I chose to use oil paints because it is so fluid and changeable. The subject matter presented itself indirectly. I had been working on monochrome macchie of this scene for some time when I thought the final sketch really nailed it. The challenge was to apply colour without destroying the underlying macchia that appeared after several versions had been rejected. The final product remains true to the original macchia which gives the work more "honesty" than otherwise would be the case. Moreover, I think this piece has a nice balance between abstraction and realism and that the texture created by staccato brushwork keeps the painting interesting and vibrant.
