About The Artwork

"Camusu Aike", acrylic paint, collage, monoprint, watercolour on canvas. Inspired by Patagonia and the Tehuelche-Aonikenk people, one of the native peoples of the region. This nomadic group freely moved across these austral lands until 1878, when Julio A. Roca, general of the Argentinian army, carried out a campaign of extermination against the indigenous peoples, which he called "The Conquest of the Desert". After this genocide, the Argentinian government cornered the indigenous people who remained in the territory in marginal lands called reserves. Today, the AĆ³nikenk-Tehuelche descendants live in the Camusu Aike reserve. After more than 100 years of occupation, the lands of their reserve have been usurped and there is a military base and oil extraction. Despite this, the community is denied access to basic services such as electricity and heating in the coldest region of Argentina.

I am a Colombian artist living in Barcelona. Through art I have been able to connect with the landscapes and culture of my ancestors. I re-imagine Latin American art through historical figures, legends, landscapes and symbology inspired by the iconography of pre-Hispanic goldsmith masters. I am inspired by the revival of historical memory, the wisdom of indigenous cosmovisions and nature. My work frequently transforms landscapes into relief engravings with metallic colors that represent the mineral richness of the earth. For the last four years I have been managing Casa Jaguar /@casajaguar.studio/, an art studio in Barcelona where I collaborate with other Colombian audiovisual artists with whom I share my interest in developing a visual language that integrates pre-Hispanic art with contemporary art.
