Jekein Lato-Unah (b.1996) is a Nigerian multi-dimensional artist born and bred in Lagos, Nigeria. Originally self-taught, she decided to undergo formal training and bagged certificates in pottery, painting and performance art. Jekein has always been fascinated with the idea of creation and creating things and she is of the belief that in order to attain fulfilment, one must create something that enriches the lives of others. Although, she is in her final lap studying Law at the University of Lagos, one of her primary interests seems to be expressing different basic human conditions amongst women via paintings. Jekein’s work is a response to her space, based on her interaction with her environment. She's known for her use of symbols and patterns to create pieces that reflect social, political and cultural issues in a thought-provoking manner to spark discuss. Jekein has won the award for Outstanding contribution to the Arts and Culture in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos and won SME100 Nigeria's 25 under 25 awards for her invaluable contribution to the Arts, Crafts and Culture. Jekein studied Performance Art under Jelili Atiku at the Goethe Institut in November 2016 where she absorbed the ability to create and confuse associated with Atiku's spontaneous creativity, subsequently refining her own visual and conceptual analysis. Subsequently, she was a participant and Art director for "A Day Exhibition"; by Jelili Atiku at the Art House Foundation Residency. She was an exhibiting artist at "It's not Furniture"; the Temple Management Company's debut art exhibition held at Omenka Gallery and a part of an all female exhibition titled “The Female Form” held at the Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Nigeria for Lola Shoneyin’s Ake Festival. Lato-Unah is a feminist, humanitarian and activist who has been featured on the BBC for her unending fight against patriarchy and every form of abuse people, most importantly, women suffer. She worked as Programs Lead at The Stand to End Rape Initiative, is a convener of the #ChurchToo Movement in Nigeria and served as the Communications Lead at MarketMarch, a movement set up to tackle marketplace harassment in Nigerian markets.
