Inspired by the legendary punk band SNFU, I decided to create a world populated by references taken from the song titles and themes of their music, and merge it with my own personal sensibilities. There is a great deal of dark humour, and yet great honesty and seriousness in their music, which is something that I have always worked into my own art as well, so it was a very apt union. Not seen in this photo is the fact that the top, and two sides of the panel are painted as a cross section of the scene portrayed on the face of the panel, allowing you to see both the inside and outside of the buildings, and adding an unusual sense of physical depth to the painting. Painting the sides also adds a third-person narrative sense to the work; giving the viewer the kind of omniscient experience one gets from reading a book, and knowing details of what happens behind the scenes, as well as what's happening on the surface of the story.

Rather than having a single style of repeated works, I prefer to have a large group of themes, ideas and styles to draw from which I periodically re-visit, and which will continually grow, evolve and influence each other, leading to new interests over the course of my lifetime. I take a very long-term approach to art creation, seeing the scope of my past, present and planned future work all together, and how it will all be unified at the end of my life into a cohesive whole. I feel that approaching art in this way keeps my work fresh, and helps it to be less repetitive and formulaic than if I were to work in the same style for long periods of time, repeating the same motions and artwork over and over. This decision echoes my feeling that life is a long series of learning adventures in which we examine our surroundings and turn them inside-out to study and interpret them, then show others what we have learned from the experience.
